People Need To Learn
People need to learn how to scrape the snow off the roof of their car BEFORE getting on the interstate. Watching a six foot slab of ice fly off the roof of a speeding SUV and float away like a snowflake is quite beautiful. Watching it come down and slam into your windshield is less so. Fortunately no damage was done, other than to my heart. But if it hit edge first instead of sideways I could have seen a quite different result. At least that guy got off the road and scrapped his SUV down then. On the other hand, I saw similar flying slabs of snow or ice at least three more times on my drive home.
Yeah, snow & ice slabs flying off of vehicles on the road is cool looking. Especially cool looking is when there’s a whole bunch of unpacked snow, resulting in it looking like a snowstorm is chasing the vehicle. But stuff flying off is also an indicator that the driver of the vehicle has no clue how dangerous/annoying it can be. Coming from upstate NY, where we get more snow than most folks, I’ve seen sheets of snowpack & ice fly off and cause serious damage.
- brief followup to explain the “annoying” in my last response -
The annoying part (as opposed to the clearly dangerous) is when you’re behind someone with one of those snowstorms chasing them, and you’ve got the whole reduced visibility thing just like when you’re driving in a snowstorm.
Its even better looking when a slab detaches from the wall of a highrise and comes floating down. Usually it breaks into a harmless spray before it hits but I once saw a cab smashed by a chunk from the Sears Tower.
