Baby Steps in Iraq
The presidential triumvirate in Iraq has finally been selected. (One president and two vice presidents.) Talabani was elected president, which may or may not be a good thing. For those who don’t remember he was one of the two leaders of Kurdistan who, while building a strong country under Saddam’s umbrella, also fought a number of civil wars amongst themselves.
In any case having more of a government in place is a good thing, and Talabani mentioned in his inaugural address that he favored laws with a secular underpinning, but that respected Iraq’s islamic identity. That is a very good thing to hear out of the new president, some of the other choices had… different views.
